Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra

That's the clearest feeling you get when using the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, which will be available in March starting at $ 1,399.99. If there ever was an embodiment of a chip on the shoulder of a technology company, this phone giant is his. After a few years behind the iPhone and Android competitors in several key areas, Ultra is Samsung's answer. This is a Statement Phone, which aims to be the most powerful and best phone ever - damned price and size.

There are many impressive things from the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra:

including screens, batteries, 5G networks, speed, and more. But its flagship feature is the all-new camera system, which displays a very high number of megapixels and telephoto zoom in an effort to begin the next stage of cellular photography.

Samsung calls this phone the Samsung Galaxy S20 instead of the Galaxy S11 to indicate that this is the first of a new generation, and it might be too open. Just as impressive as the whole phone, cameras often act like first gen technology products with first gen technology problems.

The Galaxy S20 Ultra big. There is no way out. With a 6.9 inch screen, this is taller and thicker than the iPhone 11 Pro Max. And even though technically it weighs less, it feels more impressive, which is probably a balanced thing. I compare it with the phone just because it might be more familiar to more people, but it is higher than other plus-sized phones like Pixel 4 XL.

Ultra is also impressive in appearance, only comes in black or gray. The most prominent - physically and aesthetically - is the rectangular camera module on the back. It was placed with a symmetrical camera and flash sensor grid.

It's made well in the typical Samsung Galaxy way, with curved glass on the front and back - though, this time, the front is slightly less curved at the edges than the back. All buttons are on the right hand side; fortunately, the special Bixby button from the previous Galaxy phone has been removed. I say the button is hard to reach, but the reality is that if you try to use this phone with one hand, you are fooling yourself.

It's shiny and slippery, and it shows fingerprints. You may often see fingerprint criticism, but this is worse than usual here. The large camera module makes the phone vibrate on the table if you tap near the top of the screen. It also took a mysterious wall somewhere along the line. The moral of all these observations, unfortunately, is the same: get a case.

There are several reasons why this phone is so big, but the most obvious is to give you a 6.9 inch screen. This is the easiest feature on the S20 Ultra. Because Samsung uses the fingerprint sensor on the screen instead of the camera that unlocks the face, the screen can get to the top of the screen, which makes it still look bigger. There is only a small punch-hole in the center for a selfie camera.

This screen is also one of the reasons I think the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra shows Samsung is trying to prove something: it offers a 120Hz refresh rate option. The high refresh rate makes the animation and scroll look smoother and can also help compatible games. We saw several Android phones trying it out last year, but the Samsung Galaxy S20 took it this year.

Unlike other companies, Samsung does not try to dynamically change the refresh rate based on what screen. It comes out of the box at 60Hz, and when you set it to 120Hz, it just locks there. The reason you might want the rate to be variable is to save battery, but Samsung claims around 10 percent hit on battery life.

I'll be honest: I don't know whether it's true or not because I immediately activated the 120Hz option and never looked back. It makes the experience of using Android so much better and smoother that I can't turn it off.

The 120Hz screen is not the only thing that can affect battery life. In fact, measuring battery life for the  Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is a special challenge because there are so many variables in how people will use it. Recording 4K and 8K videos will drain the battery quickly, as does the 5W mmWave (if you can find it), as does intensive gaming. I think many people will buy this phone to do these things and more.

There is one more thing that can affect batteries: a new processor. The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra has the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, which does not have an integrated cellular modem. Snapdragons before, and which are usually seen as battery savers.
